FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. Where do Adromischus grow?

Adromischus plants are frequently seen growing among other leaf succulents throughout southern Africa, in the drier areas of all of the Provinces of South Africa and much of Namibia. They are associated most with the Succulent Karoo biome, but are also present in rocky places in Fynbos, Nama Karoo and (Spekboom) Thicket biomes. The distribution maps here for individual species should give a good idea of their where-abouts.

If it is true that the geographic origin of a genus is near the centre of diversity, then an origin for Adromischus in the southern Cape is suggested, but each section has a distinctive distribution.

It is remarkable that within each of the five sections, species usually do not overlap. However, sectional distributions do overlap and thus more than one species of Adromischus can be found at a given place. Perhaps the only exception to this rule is A. filicaulis from Section 1, which occasionally grows near other Section 1 species. Examples of combinations where three or more species occur in the same vicinity include:

Sections 1, 1 & 5 A. alstonii, A. filicaulis, A. marianiae Helskloof
Sections 1, 1, 4 & 5 Top: A. hemisphaericus;  Bottom: A. liebenbergii, A. triflorus, A. marianiae Swartruggens
Sections 1, 1, 4 & 5 A. filicaulis var. marlothii, A. liebenbergii, A. triflorus, A. leucophyllus S. Laingsburg
Sections 1, 3, 4 & 5A. fili. v. marlothii, A. caryophyllaceus, A. maculatus, A. leucophyllusMontagu (Bryan Makin)
Sections 1, 3, 4 & 5 A. caryophyllaceus, A. cristatus, A. inamoenus, A. subdistichus Nuwekloof, Willowmore
Sections 3, 4, 5 & 5 A. fallax, A. sphenophyllus, A.cooperi, A. cristatus Valley of Desolation, G-R
